Water for Elephants is the type of book that you don't want to finish--although part of you does want to finish it, so you can get back to your life!
Several friends had told me about this book, but the subject didn't sound that interesting to me. I was wrong! It's about a young man who becomes a veterinarian for a ragtag circus, falls in love, and becomes a man. The chapters intersperse between the present time, as he is a 93-year-old man in a nursing home, and his circus adventures. Gruen does an outstanding job getting inside the man's point of view, and also capturing what it's like to be an elderly, incapacitated person. I loved this book!
